MMORPG deletes one of the highest characters in the world, wiping out many years of play time

After the big waves of bans last year, the German developers at CipSoft are continuing their cleanup campaign in the MMORPG Tibia in 2025. For the first time, a player from the world’s top team was among the deleted accounts.

What’s happening with Tibia? In the last quarter of 2024, the developers from the Regensburg studio CipSoft intensified their fight against accounts that gain an unfair advantage with unauthorized scripts and macros.

Almost 8,000 players were affected by the first ban wave, including the highest-level knight at the time (level 2,453). Those responsible at Tibia later had to admit that they had used the ban hammer to catch some innocent people – the corresponding deletions were lifted in December – but that obviously does not speak against further measures.

A few days ago, on January 7, 2025, CipSoft’s next big ban campaign took place, which is said to have caught over 1,200 alleged cheaters (via tibiatracker.com). For the first time, one of the world’s top 7 players is among those affected.

Who got hit? The Brazilian player Szczeisny was one of the absolute top players in the official rankings at level 2,586 (via tibia.com). Only six other characters currently level up (Dejairzin is currently at number 1 with his level 2751 druid).

How much time Szczeisny put into the deleted character is unclear. As is well known, there is no level maximum in Tibia, like in WoW. Theoretically, you can level up for as long as you want. But the further you progress, the more experience points you need for each level up. In addition, every death punishes you with a loss of XP. To get to level 1,500, a player needed around 13 years.

What do I need to know about Tibia and CipSoft? The studio from Regensburg was founded in 2001 after the MMORPG Tibia, released in 1997, became a success. The online role-playing game with the charming retro look has had 32 million players and 200 million euros in sales over the years, and is said to be more successful today than ever before.

The studio was able to grow sustainably, to currently 100 employees. In 2019, Tibia even won the German Developer Award in the “long-running” category. Thanks to all of this, Tibia is one of the oldest and most successful online role-playing games in Europe. Last year, the developers entered the world of cryptocurrencies with the MMORPG and introduced the Tibia Token.
