MMORPG about Dungeons & Dragons gets a server where you only have one life – That’s it

Dungeons & Dragons Online (PC) is an MMORPG that couldn’t be more classic. But now the game gets a mechanic that is comparatively new: Perma-Death-Server. There you lose your character if you die only once.

What mechanics are new? Starting July 27th, players of Dungeons & Dragons Online, a classic MMORPG from the developers of LOTRO, will be able to play the sixth season of the hardcore league. This lasts until October 24th and brings an exciting mechanic with it: permanent death.

Because if your character dies even once on the hardcore server, he has missed his chance and will never come back. So you lose the entire progress of the character and can only use it to a very limited extent.

Even after death, you can still log in and, for example, chat or administrate your guild. But then you can’t do much more with the dead hero.

Why should you do this? To play, you have to start over on a new server. So you don’t risk what you’ve already earned. If you survive for a particularly long time or solve an extraordinary number of quests, you can expect many account-wide rewards.

You can also transfer your character to another server at the end of the season for free and continue playing with it there normally, even if it has died.

In order to get really good rewards, you have to be at least in the top 100 in one of the two leaderboards (survive long and solve many quests). Also, you must be alive. If you die, you also lose your place in the leaderboard.

Even bad internet can kill you – and that’s your problem

What subtleties are there? The developers explicitly mention that the mechanics don’t matter what you die with. If your character is dead, he’s gone. It doesn’t matter if you fall in battle or off a cliff. Even if the internet is to blame or “The Shroud” kills you in the associated quest.

With the latter, the developers even recommend not even attempting the quest if you care about your character. There is still a kind of safety net for you in hardcore mode.

What’s changing in hardcore? You can no longer buy any benefits and people who pay the optional VIP pass monthly have no bonuses here either. Every character starts at level 1 and has to fight their way up, no matter where they come from.

However, a restriction also comes into play to protect you. You cannot accept quests that are more than two levels above your current level. This protects you from getting smacked too hard. At the same time, however, it prohibits professionals from grinding EP early and quickly.

As a little extra hurdle, there are hellhounds that appear randomly and make your life particularly difficult. Otherwise it would be too easy.

What do you think of such a server? Would that be something you could envision for your favorite MMORPG as well? Do you play Dungeons & Dragons Online yourself? Feel free to write it to us in the comments here at MeinMMO, we look forward to your opinions!
