Nope is one of the highlights of the sci-fi year, surprising and scary with its original mix of alien invasion, western and animal horror. Get Out and Wir mastermind Jordan Peele has once again proven his knack for original genre films that give familiar clichés a new twist.
Anyone who missed Nope in the cinema should give the mixture of War of the Worlds and Jaws a chance in the home cinema. Otherwise you will miss it possibly the best sci-fi horror film of the year.
What is the sci-fi horror movie about?
Nope – Trailer 2 (German) HD
James (Daniel Kaluuya) and Jill (Keke Palmer) are not only a couple, but also the proud owners of the Haywood ranch, which has been in the family for years. In a valley far away from civilization in rural California, they train horses that are then used in the shooting of Hollywood films.
But the peaceful life changes when an inexplicable event breaks their routine: One night, phenomena appear in the sky that cannot be explained. And the shocking sight appears to be just a foreshadowing of a much larger, more terrifying mystery that is unstoppably coming their way. One thing is certain: for the residents of the gorge the horror has only just begun…
Why is the film worth it?
On the one hand, Nope is supported by an excellent cast, which includes Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya and his film sister Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and character actor Michael Wincott, who steals some scenes as an idiosyncratic cameraman.
On the other hand, Nope lives from a very peculiar atmosphere that eludes the conventional sci-fi and horror clichés. There are an infinite number of invasion movies but only one that feels like nope. This is remarkable because although the Story fresh and inventive obviously draws on Steven Spielberg influences, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jaws, not to mention HG Wells’ War of the Worlds, which Spielberg also filmed. In short, Nope offers a unique sci-fi experience with memorable characters.
