“Mixture of Star Citizen and Starfield”

The new MMORPG Ashes of Creation is being criticized: As announced, as of January 17th they have stopped selling pre-order packages for $250, which grant access to an alpha in the 3rd quarter of 2024. This all has an aftertaste, some critics believe.

This is the situation:

  • Ashes of Creation is a sandbox MMORPG announced in 2016.
  • It is currently not playable – the next time you should be able to play the MMORPG is in the third quarter of 2024, in Alpha 2.
  • But you can no longer get into this Alpha 2: access is only available to people who have bought a pre-order package for $250. This is no longer offered.
  • Ashes of Creation shows the fight against a giant cyclops

MMORPG uses “FOMO” tactics, creates artificial time pressure

This is how it went: Ashes of Creation had already announced in August 2023 that they had enough testers for Alpha 2 and would no longer sell the pre-order package. However, they did not stop selling immediately, but instead gave the date as January 17, 2024. So almost half a year later.

Before the package was actually taken off the market, potential customers were reminded that this was their last opportunity to make a purchase.

However, the package is still not “really gone” because anyone who has previously bought a smaller pre-order package can still purchase an upgrade for an additional charge and still get into the beta. This is reported by massivelyop.

What’s the criticism about it?? The criticism of the whole spectacle is that the developers want to create an artificial feeling of “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out). Of course they want to sell as many of these expensive packages as possible, but they artificially act as if the offer won’t be around for much longer in order to pressure potential buyers to take them.

The MMORPG does the same thing with “time-limited skin sales,” according to criticism.

The MMORPG is being torn apart in a current thread on reddit. Here it says:

  • It’s silly anyway that the MMORPG isn’t even playable after so long in development. Development takes forever. Final Fantasy XIV completed its reboot in a much shorter time and recreated itself from scratch
  • When the game comes out, it will be at least “5 years out of date”
  • The game would have raised far too high expectations that it could never live up to
  • One user describes it as a “mixture of Starfield and Star Citizen.”
  • Despite all the criticism, Ashes of Creation is still one of the most promising new MMORPGs. But that’s what it has been for many, many years: The 5 most promising new MMORPGs for 2024 and beyond
