The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3 percent, while the broad S&P 500 Index fell 0.1 percent and the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.2 percent.
During the day, a series of interim reports came out. Among others, the major banks JP Morgan Chase & Co and Wells Fargo came up with their figures. Both beat expectations, but share prices went in different directions. JP Morgan rose 0.6 percent while Wells Fargo fell 0.3 percent.
The health insurance group United Health Group announced that the company has raised its profit forecast for the full year. The stock surged 7.2 percent.
For the entire week, the S&P 500 rose 2.4 percent, the Nasdaq 3.3 percent and the Dow Jones 2.3 percent.
