In Hong Kong, things look much gloomier. The Hang Seng index shed 1.9 percent as investors awaited word on the economic path the Chinese regime will take after Xi Jinping was re-elected for a third term at the weekend.

In mainland China, however, the situation is calmer. Shanghai’s composite index retreats 0.1 percent, while the Shenzhen composite index stands still.
