As the Japan Mobility Fair 2023 approaches, Mitsubishi Motors is creating anticipation with its “electric crossover MPV” concept. This innovative minivan displays a sense of adventure and could potentially herald the next iteration of the Mitsubishi Delica, which is currently in its 5th generation and needs an update.
Mitsubishi offers previews of what this interesting concept can bring. They first revealed the front lighting signature of this “Borderless Adventure” concept, and now they have unveiled its rear end, highlighting the single-box design. T-shaped LED taillights integrated into the rear glass are complemented by the illuminated Mitsubishi emblem. While the lower half of the vehicle retains some mystery, the presence of a roof-mounted box hints at additional storage possibilities.
Moving away from traditional side mirrors, Mitsubishi’s concept includes brackets designed to accommodate mirror-replacement cameras. According to Mitsubishi, this innovation not only reduces aerodynamic drag, but also provides an unobstructed view of the road. Inside, the company promises a 6-seat design with an emphasis on providing an “extremely spacious cabin,” signaling their commitment to roomy interior space.
Mitsubishi claims that this electric concept will offer the agility of an SUV with the practicality of an MPV. While the company has hinted at its commitment to a carbon-neutral future, its powertrains are likely to lean towards Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology rather than going all-electric. However, Mitsubishi guarantees that the concept will include an electric four-wheel drive system, making it suitable for off-road adventures.
The question in mind is whether this exciting concept will turn into a production model. Considering that the current Mitsubishi Delica D:5 has seen little change since 2007 and was only facelifted in 2018, there is a growing feeling that this concept could indeed be its successor, marking a new beginning for the model.
Mitsubishi does not stop there, it is introducing another concept at the Tokyo fair in cooperation with Lifehub Inc.3. Named “Last 1 Mile Mobility”, this compact mobility vehicle resembles a buggy and is designed for short-distance trips. This vehicle, which accommodates a driver and a passenger, runs entirely on electricity and gets its power from reused batteries.
Beyond these intriguing concepts, Japan Mobility Show 2023 visitors can expect to see Mitsubishi’s established production lineup, including the Outlander PHEV and Delica D:5, as well as the new Triton/L200, a replica of the rally version that once competed in the Asian Cross Country Rally. They can look forward to it.
