His New Democracy party garnered 40.5 percent of the vote – more than twice as many as main opponent Syriza. The left-wing alliance landed on just under 18 percent of the vote, a small loss compared to the first round of elections in May – and a substantial decline compared to the 2019 election.
— My goal was to secure a stable government with a majority in parliament. Unfortunately, it took two elections to achieve that, Mitsotakis said when he was tasked with forming a government by President Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Monday.
Mitsotakis failed to secure his own majority in the May election, prompting him to call a new election. This time he was able to rely on new rules, which were hammered through by New Democracy during the previous term, and which mean that the largest party gets a bonus mandate.
Thanks to them, New Democracy has now secured 158 out of 300 seats in parliament, compared to 48 for Syriza.
