Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announces an additional 300 million euros in the fight against the effects of climate change. A total of EUR 600 million has now been earmarked for this purpose.

– Greece is at war in peacetime. In a two-week period, we have suffered the worst forest fire and the worst floods in our history, Mitsitakis said in a speech in Thessaloniki, continuing:

– The climate crisis is here and forces us to see everything in a new way.

It is urgent to reconstruct the infrastructure, according to the Prime Minister. The new funds are to be financed with a higher tax for tourists “especially in very exclusive hotels”, he added.

The death toll from the floods in the central part of the country has risen to 17. Among the victims are two tourists from Austria.
