  • Hostage takers at Russian penal colony killed

    Russian special forces have “neutralized” four inmates who took several employees of a Russian high-security prison hostage, the Russian National Guard announced.

    The incident is said to have occurred in Surovikino in Volgograd in southwestern Russia. According to the state news agency Tass, at least one employee at the penal colony has been killed in connection with the uprising. Several more employees were reported injured.

    It is the second time in a few months that a similar incident has taken place in a Russian prison.

    A van is on fire on the E4 at the height of Tystberga.

    The alarm came in around 4:30 p.m.

    – The emergency services are there, it’s a fully developed fire, says Ola Nilsson, team leader at SOS alarm, to SN.

    The Swedish Transport Agency writes that the incident has a major impact on traffic.

    Today, Friday, one year after the death of the leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, his memory was honored with flowers in several Russian cities.

    Prigozhin fell out of favor with Vladimir Putin after he led an insurgent march on Moscow on June 23, 2023.

    Two months later, Yevgeny Prigozhin’s plane crashed and everyone on board died.

  • Fed chief: Time to lower interest rates

    Fed chief Jerome Powell says at the meeting of central bank governors in Jackson Hole that it is time to lower the key interest rate.

    – It is time for an adjustment of monetary policy, he says.

    He expects inflation in the US to be on the way to the 2 percent target and further says that he does not want to see any further cooling of the labor market.

    That the US central bank Federal Reserve (Fed) is getting closer to an interest rate cut was clear when the minutes from the last interest rate meeting in July became public earlier this week.

    A large majority of members of the Fed’s monetary policy committee are ready to cut interest rates at the September meeting, if inflation develops as expected.

  • Doctors are prosecuted for infringing 40 medical records

    A doctor risks prison after reading 40 patients’ medical records unrelated to his own duties.

    At the same time, 24 affected patients are demanding compensation from the doctor for a total of SEK 200,000, reports Hallandsposten.

    The doctor has explained her actions by saying that she wanted to know if colleagues had written anything unfavorable about her in the medical records. The action was revealed in a routine check and the doctor was dismissed.

    Now the doctor has been prosecuted for data breach.

    – It is my assessment that the doctor should be held responsible for these crimes and that the punishment is at the prison level. Now it will be up to the district court to decide whether the evidence is sufficient, says prosecutor Caroline Nilsson to the newspaper.

    A storm is moving in over the West Coast.

    Storm Lilian, as it has been called by British meteorologists, moved in over Britain already yesterday. It brought heavy rain, wind gusts of up to 35 meters per second and led to flooding, power outages and canceled flights.

    In Sweden, SMHI warns that Lilian can lead to floods in Stenungsund, Tjörn and Orust, among others, writes The ST newspaper. The warning is valid until 11 p.m.

    The weather also affects train traffic. The trains between Gothenburg and Strömstad will be stopped from 19.30 this evening until 12 on Saturday.

    The trains between Herrljunga and Uddevalla/Gårdsjö are also stopped.

    Households that are close to the water are in the danger zone and there is a risk that quays, piers and buildings will be affected.

    But at 3:30 p.m. it was still calm.

    – We have only been out by a smaller motorboat that had taken on water, the rescue service says.

  • New advice for vaccines against mpox

    The Swedish Public Health Agency presents new advice for vaccination against mpox.

    The update of the recommendations for vaccination concerns those who will travel to a geographical area with an ongoing spread of mpox in the community, and who may be exposed to a particular risk of being exposed to infection, FHM writes on its website.

    Examples of affected groups include health care workers, aid workers or others who intend to stay in a geographical area with ongoing spread of mpox in the community and who intend to have close physical contact with people in local communities where the infection prevention measures in the general travel recommendations are not assessed be sufficient.

  • Man assaulted and stabbed

    A man was attacked and stabbed in Alvesta at lunchtime on Friday, writes Smålandsposten.

    Police were called to a fight outside in a residential area. There must have been several perpetrators who assaulted a man.

    The man was taken to hospital by ambulance. The police have been able to talk to him, but the rest of the damage is unclear.

    A hunt is now underway for the perpetrators.

    – We are on site with several units and a dog patrol that searches for traces, Katarina Rusin at the police command center tells the newspaper.

  • FHM: New mpox vaccine advice presented

    The Public Health Agency will present new recommendations for vaccination against mpox during Friday.

    The new recommendations have been developed after the World Health Organization, WHO, last week declared a global emergency due to the disease. This since a new variant of the virus spread.

    The virus variant is called clade 1, and appears to be more infectious and dangerous than the previous variant that spread. The ongoing clade 1 outbreak was detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a number of other countries in central Africa. In the region, thousands of people have been infected, and more than 500 have died from the new virus variant.

    The first reported case outside of Africa was a man from Sweden, who had been traveling in the Congo.

  • Ukraine: Recaptured territory in Kharkiv

    Ukrainian forces have reportedly retaken nearly two square kilometers of land in the Kharkiv region, AP reports.

    The area was previously controlled by a Russian battalion, according to a statement from a Ukrainian brigade.

    Russia launched a major offensive in the region of northeastern Ukraine last spring. Initially, Russian forces took large areas of land, but the offensive later stalled.

    The data on the recapture of Ukraine have not been independently confirmed.

  • Police action in central Borås

    There is currently a police operation in central Borås. Several streets in have been blocked off.

    The police do not want to go into more detail about what the operation is about.

    – Right now I can only say: if you follow the cordons, there is no risk to the public. Stay on the right side of the cordon, says police spokesperson Christian Brattgård.

    According to Aftonbladet’s information, the task force is on the scene.

  • The Norwegian government wants to expand the right to abortion

    The Norwegian government proposes to extend the right to free abortion from week 12 to week 18.

    “Today’s abortion law has played an important role for women throughout the country for tens of years, and my goal is that the new abortion law will also stand for a long time to come,” says Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre (Ap) in a press release.

    In Sweden, since 1974, women have had the right to decide on an abortion up to and including the 18th week of pregnancy. In Norway, a pregnant woman can apply for an abortion from week 13 to week 22. The case is then dealt with in a special committee.

    In a report in December, an investigation determined that the right to free abortion in Norway should be expanded in the way the government is proposing on Friday.

    The proposal must now be submitted to the Storting.

  • Man seriously injured after accident

    A man who has stopped at the side of the road outside Linköping has been hit, the police write on their website.

    The man, who was in his 70s, was hit by another car and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.

    No one is a suspect in the case.
