The spread of infection is on the rise both in Sweden and the rest of Europe. There is a new sub-variant on Omikron, called BA5, which is spreading.
– As it crosses the protective barrier against infection, then it suddenly has an entire population to infect. Then it can spread wildly, says virus researcher Ali Mirazimi.
The fact that many are vaccinated or have been infected means that we have good protection against serious illness – despite suspicions that BA5 is more contagious than omicron. And how vaccination coverage can be increased is one of the questions for the government’s new investigators.
The government is now appointing an inquiry which, among other things, will ensure that vaccination coverage increases and that old mistakes are not repeated during the next pandemic.
