Ministry of Labor investigating after two workers injured at Brantford company

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Skills Development is investigating an incident that injured two workers last week at GreenMantra Technologies.

In an email to The Expositor, the Elgin Street company said “two third-party contractors were injured while completing a maintenance activity at our site during a scheduled shutdown.”

“Local authorities and the Ministry of Labor were immediately notified,” said the email. “We are working in partnership with the Ministry and contractors to investigate this incident. The company is committed to the health and safety of its employees, contractors, and the local community.”

In an email to The Expositor on Monday, ministry spokesperson Jennifer Rushby said a ministry inspector has been assigned to investigate.

“One requirement has been issued to the employer, GreenMantra Technologies,” said Rushby.

When an inspector determines a contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is occurring, they issue orders/requirements to the appropriate workplace party to bring them into compliance, said information provided by ministry spokesperson Anuradha Dhar.

Requirements are types of orders issued when an inspector needs to gather information or determine/verify compliance. Examples include a requirement to provide documents, records or information or to keep employees away from the scene.

Rushby said no additional information is being released because the investigation is ongoing.

GreenMantra Technologies moved into a facility on Elgin Street in 2012, According to its website, the company transforms waste plastic into specialty polymer additives that can be used in a range of industrial applications.
