Around 31,000 suspected war crimes have been documented in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion almost a year ago, according to the human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties.
Torture, murder, sexual assault and attacks on civilian infrastructure are some of the crimes being investigated.
Discussions are now underway internationally about how best to hold those responsible for the crimes to account, and several countries within the EU are pushing for the establishment of a special international tribunal.
– No one who engages in that type of crime should get away, says Sweden’s Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer at a press conference.
On Friday, the EU justice ministers will gather in the city of Arlanda to discuss the issue. And Sweden, which leads the meeting as chairman of the EU Council of Ministers, thinks that a special tribunal would be a good idea.
