Madlener’s plan has met with a lot of resistance from environmental clubs, the municipality of Utrecht and the province of Utrecht, partly because many trees have to be cut down for the widening. They made an alternative plan for a better traffic flow that spares the trees. In the alternative, the highway box will not be widened, but more lanes will be constructed within the existing width.
