Minister fired after hospital fire

Senegal’s Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr has been fired following a fire in a neonatal ward in the city of Tivaouane that claimed the lives of eleven infants.

The fire, which occurred late on Wednesday local time, is the latest in a series of serious incidents at Senegalese hospitals that have exposed the weaknesses of the country’s healthcare system. It must have occurred after a short circuit in the electrical system.

The country’s president Macky Sall has announced three days of national mourning.
