Millions without power in Cuba | SVT News

Cuba has been hit by an energy crisis and according to Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, the main reason is “the lack of fuel”.

Blame the US

A large power plant has broken down and now schools, some industry and nightclubs are closed for three days to try to keep electricity consumption down.

– The situation has worsened in recent days and we must be transparent. We are paralyzing the economy to ensure energy for our citizens, says Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, in a speech to the nation.

He blames the crisis on the US trade embargo against the country, which has made it “difficult to import fuel and other necessary resources”.

Many power outages

Cubans are used to longer power outages and many times they can last up to 18 hours per day. The worst affected areas tend to be outside the capital, Havana.

“Solving the energy crisis is of the highest priority and we will not give up until it is solved,” writes Manuel Marrero Cruz on X.
