Heavy snowfall and winds have moved in across the United States, where around 70 percent of the population may be affected according to the weather warnings issued, according to the weather authority NWS (National Weather Service).
In New York, a state of emergency has been declared by Governor Kathy Hochul. In some parts of the state, the precipitation comes as rain that quickly turns to ice, and in other parts there is a risk of flooding.
“We’ve had ice, floods, snow, freezing temperatures and everything that mother nature could throw at us this weekend,” she says during a press conference.
More than 4,100 flights within, to or from the United States have been canceled so far Friday, according to the site Flightaware. Another 4,650 are delayed.
The cold temperatures that have set in affect, among other things, the more than 1.4 million homes and businesses that have suffered power outages.
