A bluefin tuna of just over 200 kilos has been sold for the equivalent of SEK 2.9 million at the traditional New Year’s auction at the fish market in Tokyo.

The price is more than double what was paid for a similar fish at last year’s New Year’s auction. Although the price does not reach the amounts paid at the New Year auctions before the pandemic, and with the reduced demand, this year’s price is seen as a positive sign for the fishing industry.

– We have had several depressing years. I hope we can deliver joy to everyone through occasions like this, says Akifumi Sakagami who is the head chef at the restaurant that bought the fish.
