The agency’s figures show that the average Swede drank 160 liters per year in 1980. The preliminary figures for 2021 point to a milk drinking amount of 63 liters per year – a reduction of just over 60 percent.
For fresh vegetables, the consumption trend has been the opposite. Last year, the Swede ate an average of 47 kilos per year, more than twice as much as in 1980. When it comes to fruit, it is mainly a matter of a change in habits: in the past we were primarily an apple and pear-eating people – but nowadays we choose more often bananas and other more exotic fruits.
Apple and pear consumption has almost halved since 1980, while consumption in the bananas, melons category has more than doubled – from 9.2 kilos to 25.6 kilos per person per year.
Another notable increase is meat consumption, which has increased by 75 percent to an average of 48.2 kilograms per person per year.
