Keanu Reeves was born for his action roles. But he had to prove that first. With Breakthrough, nobody believed in his qualities except director Kathryn Bigelow. But she was spot on. The action milestone paved the way for the actor to join The Matrix and John Wick. It’s on TV today.
On TV: Action highlight laid the foundation for The Matrix and John Wick
Skepticism about Keanu Reeves is difficult to imagine given his superhero status today. In the early 1990s, however, his only major success was Bill & Ted’s Madman’s Journey Through Time. And yet he was Bigelow’s first and only choice for the action role. Her ex-husband James Cameron (avatar) described her uphill struggle to be cast in 2002 (via Premiere, quoted by Slashfilm).
We had a meeting with the guys from 20th Century Fox. They said, “Keanu Reeves in an action role? How did you come up with the idea? Because of Bill & Ted?” They got really offensive. but [Kathryn] insisted he could be an action star.
And she was right. The surfer thriller starring Reeves and Patrick Swayze became a financial success and soon became a cult film. Just Reeves’ acting received critical acclaim (via New York Times). If he hadn’t passed this action test by fire, the universes of The Matrix and John Wick might have had to do without him. and Reeves might have been the comedy star as which Bill & Ted identified him as.
