Croatia’s incumbent president Zoran Milanović looks set to win the first round of the country’s presidential election. He is expected to receive over 51 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election, according to the first polling station surveys.
Thus, Milanović is believed to have secured the presidency for another term already in the first round of elections, if the final result shows that he receives more than 50 percent of the vote.
Otherwise, a second and decisive election round will be held in two weeks.
The challenger Dragan Primorac looks set to get around 19 percent of the vote, according to the measurements published by the public service company HRT.
Zoran Milanović has previously been the party leader of the Social Democrats, while Dragan Primorac belongs to the conservative HDZ, which holds government power in Croatia.
The president of Croatia has some power in the country’s foreign and security policy. He is also the commander of the Armed Forces of Croatia.
