WHO IS GORBAÇOV?

Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 in the village of Privolye in the Stawropol region of the North Caucasus. Graduated from Moscow University Faculty of Law.

He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1952. He also took part in the Young Communist League. He married Raisa Maksimovna Titarenko, whom he met during this period, on September 25, 1953.

He entered the Senate in 1978 as agriculture minister. In the same year, he held a summit meeting with Ronald Reagan in Geneva to exchange information on disarmament, science, culture and education. He was appointed to the post of head of state in 1988. In the elections held in 1989, he was re-elected as the chairman of the parliament.

On August 19, 1991, the KGB under the command of Gennad Yanayev organized a coup against Gorbachev on the pretext of not supporting the communist regime enough. But this attempt failed. However, upon the increasing internal turmoil, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned from his post on 25 December 1991.
