Mikaela Shiffrin won the evening slalom in Flachau. It was an emotional moment for the American star after the challenging last few days.
Alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin won the evening slalom in Flachau in the alpine skiing world cup. Shiffrin took the win after the second fall and beat the Slovakian by 0.27 seconds Petra Vlhova. Even after the opening lap, Shiffrin was 0.07 seconds behind Vlhova.
Shiffrin’s victory was preceded last weekend by her male friend Aleksander Aamodt Kilden serious injury. In Wengen’s legendary plunge, Kilde drove out just before the finish line and flew towards the safety fences.
Kilde was operated on in the hospital. According to the doctor of the Norwegian national team, the athlete’s calf was cut and his shoulder was dislocated. It is not yet known how long Kilde will have to be on the sidelines.
Kilde and Shiffrin posted a photo together after the injury.
After everything that happened, American star Shiffrin was emotional after her win. He burst into tears before the winner’s interview and gave a speech with moist eyes.
Shiffrin said he was proud after the race day and was grateful for his team’s support.
– The past few days have been really challenging. My team has supported me. They helped me see Aleks, Shiffrin said.
Shiffrin also thanked the audience for their strong support on the spot.
– I know that there are many Slovaks in the audience here. I’m sorry I won today. Thanks for the encouragement though, Shiffrin said.
Shiffrin now has 57 slalom World Cup victories and 81 podium places. Now Shiffrin has increased the number of podiums Swedish men’s slalom legend By Ingemar Stenmark alongside.
There were no Finns participating in the Flachau competition.
