On Sunday night, the 2023 Hockey World Cup came to an end with the World Cup final won by Canada. For Sweden, the tournament was already over on Thursday evening due to the fiasco loss against Latvia in the World Cup quarter-finals.

But on Sunday evening, another chapter also came to an end. When the SVT expert Mikael Renberg suddenly revealed that he is leaving SVT after a full 15 years as one of Swedish hockey’s most high-profile television experts.

He has done a whole bunch of hockey WC, JVM and the program “Hockeykväll” over the years, but just before SVT closed down the last studio of the hockey WC, the unexpected words came.
– Micke… We won’t see much of you in the future in SVT? Tell me, says the presenter Dusan Umicevic.
– No, I have made my last broadcast, Renberg answers in the live broadcast.

Leaving SVT completely

Mikael Renberg himself had a long and successful playing career with many games in the NHL and the World Cup gold in 1998 with Three Crowns as his main merit. He then continues the broadcast by talking about the feelings surrounding the farewell to the television channel.
– It feels great. It has been a privilege to work for SVT, with all the nice employees. I can’t begin to count them, because there are so many, says the 51-year-old.
– It started with Marie Lehmann and Niklas Wikegård and now we are sitting here in my conclusion. But everything has a beginning and an end. And this is my end.

Renberg started working as a TV expert at SVT in 2008 and has since been a highly valued thinker of the Swedish hockey audience. Together with the pair horse Chris Harenstam have their voices incredibly associated with hockey broadcasts on SVT.
– I want to do something else in life. Devote myself more to my children. I also have another profession as a physiotherapist where I want to develop. Maybe be a little more free, he says about the decision to resign.

While he also admits that he can step in if needed in the future.
– You can call in an emergency, if Håkan (Loob) gets sick or something, says Mikael Renberg with a laugh.
