Mikael Backlund has played all of his 908 NHL games in Calgary, which he joined in January 2009.
“This is a very special day for me and my family. Calgary is our home and knowing that my playing career will continue here is important to us,” said Backlund in a comment on the team’s website.
He also says that he is proud to be named the team’s captain.
“I’m ready for the responsibility that comes with wearing the ‘C’ and I’m surrounded by strong leadership in our locker room that will help us take the next step to win the Stanley Cup.”
The 34-year-old Backlund from Västerås was noted last season for a total of 56 points, of which 19 goals and 27 assists.
