700 matches.
Then Mika Zibanejad celebrated – with double goals.
The Swede was one of the scorers in a crazy third period when the Rangers won against Detroit.
Mika Zibanejad has had a great start to the season and he hasn’t actually left a game without a score since October 29th. In total, there are seven straight games with points, this despite the fact that his New York Rangers may not have been as good as many had thought and hoped for.
Stepped up for Rangers
Zibanejad, on the other hand, has cemented his place as one of the league’s best players, and after last night’s performance against the Detroit Red Wings, the Swede has 18 points in 15 games. Nine of these are goals, and should Zibanejad continue at this rate throughout the NHL season, it speaks volumes that he will break Håkan Loob’s mighty Swedish record in the NHL, with 50 goals scored in one and the same season.
Zibanejad netted when the Rangers faced Detroit just five days ago, and when the teams met again, Zibanejad would play an even bigger role. The Swede also celebrated his 700th game in the league, and in place before the match was the Swede’s father, who had the honor of reading out the lineup in the Rangers dressing room. 700 games is a mighty milestone – and Zibanejad celebrated by playing dream hockey. Zibanejad scored the game’s first goal at the end of the first period, but the Red Wings had time to equalize.

Powerful numbers
In the second period, Lucas Raymond made it 2-1 for Detroit, but Chris Kreider equalized and the score was 2-2 all the way to six minutes of the third period. Then the Rangers responded with a crazy goal fireworks. Mika Zibanejad was one of the scorers in the period, as he scored his second goal of the game, but in total the Rangers scored a total of six(!) goals in the third period, and they won the game by a whopping 8-2.
The win means Rangers climb back into a play-off spot, and for Mika Zibanejad it was, as I said, a day to celebrate. 700 games is always special, and even more powerful is that during these games Zibanejad accounted for a whopping 533 points. A mighty scoring average, which considering how he’s playing right now; will only get better.
