On July 8, 2013, Pope Francis traveled to the small Italian island of Lampedusa, for what would be his very first trip outside the Vatican. Gateway to Europe, the island has experienced many shipwrecks and the sovereign pontiff had launched an appeal against the “globalization of indifference”. Ten years later, the situation has changed little.
