In the city of Tapachula in the state of Chiapas, located on the Mexican border with Guatemala, irregular immigrants held an unusual protest in order to get permission to pass to the USA. Immigrants gathered in front of the National Institute of Migration (INM) and started a hunger strike, using needle and thread to make their voices heard.
They sewed up their mouths, wiped the bleeding places with alcohol
Helping each other to sew up their lips, the immigrants left a piece of space in their mouths to drink water through a straw and wiped their bleeding places with alcohol. “Immigrants prick their lips together as a sign of protest. We hope the National Institute of Migration sees that migrants are human,” said Irineo Mujica, one of the activists who participated in the protest. Venezuelan immigrant Yorgelis Rivera said, “I’m doing this for my daughter. She hasn’t eaten anything in the last few hours and I can’t see a solution from the authorities. We are like prisoners here.”
FOOD AND MONEY OUT
Immigrants waiting for permission at the border, stating that they have run out of food and money, want permission to pass to the USA. In recent years, the number of immigrants fleeing violence and poverty to Mexico has also increased. Last year, the number of asylum seekers, mainly Haitians and Hondurans, increased by 87 percent in the country.
