Spanish authorities are looking for a migrant who entered the country’s territory in an unusual way. The unidentified person is said to have paraglided over the fence that separates Morocco from Spanish Melilla.

The innovative way of crossing the border was witnessed by at least two residents of Melilla, which is one of two exclaves on the African mainland belonging to Spain.

After landing, the paraglider is said to have run away, leading the authorities to suspect that he was a migrant who wanted to reach Europe.

In June, 23 people died in the chaos that arose when hundreds of migrants and refugees simultaneously tried to get over the fence to Melilla. Moroccan police fired tear gas into the crowd and beat people with batons.

Spanish authorities have also been accused of illegally pushing people back to Morocco by force, in violation of the right to seek asylum.

This year, around 1,300 migrants have arrived in Spain via Melilla, according to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.
