Stating that migraine is a special type of headache that occurs as a result of a series of chemical changes in the brain, Uysal said, “The pain usually starts in one half of the head, is severe, throbbing, lasts for at least 4 hours and is accompanied by; accompanied by nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light, sound, smell, touch. This disease is among the top 10 diseases that cause victimization by impairing the quality of life of people in our country and in the world. In our country, one tenth of children and adolescents and one fifth of our youth have migraine-related headache problems. In people with a genetic predisposition, certain triggers lead to the secretion of brain chemicals that trigger migraine attacks. Hormones, hunger, stress, sleep disorder, various foods, insufficient water consumption, climate changes, unsuitable environmental conditions in terms of light-sound-odor are some of these triggers.

Saying that migraine treatment will not be successful unless it includes interventions for chemicals in the brain, Uysal said, “Migraine is a treatable disease with awareness of the patient, regulation of life style, medication or non-drug interventions to be applied. Unscientific practices such as leech, cupping, homeopathy have no proven contribution. Migraine is a health problem that must be treated; because chronic migraine is among the top 10 diseases in the emergency response list according to the World Health Organization report. It has been reported that quality of life is impaired at rates exceeding 90 percent in one quarter of the patients. More than 65 percent of the patients reported that they had problems at work due to migraine attacks. For such patients, 40 million dollars are spent annually in the USA and 50 million dollars in Europe. “About 100,000 people a day cannot go to school or work in the UK,” he said.

Uysal, who gives advice to patients suffering from migraine in these days when the weather is increasing, said, “We recommend that patients suffering from migraine definitely wear a hat, use sunglasses in summer, and not take a walk when the sun is high. In addition, exercising at home, drinking plenty of water, reducing the amount of coffee, and maintaining the daily routine as much as possible will alleviate the pain. It should not be forgotten that stress can trigger migraine, but migraine is not a type of pain that is defined as psychological in essence.
