With the coming of Ramadan, migraine is one of the most common health problems in fasting people. Especially in the first days of Ramadan, many migraine sufferers may experience migraine attacks due to the change in their eating patterns. Prolonged hunger, thirst, and changes in sleep patterns can trigger migraines in migraine patients, as well as headaches in those who are not sick. Making important statements about the disease, Private Denizli Tekden Hospital Neurologist / Clinical Neurophysiologist Dr. Okan Bölükbaşı stated that the treatment of migraine varies from person to person. Dr. Bölükbaşı said, “Migraine, which occurs with sensitivity to light and sound, is a severe headache attack accompanied by nausea, vomiting and weakness. These complaints can last from 4 hours to 72 hours. In rare cases, the crisis may last longer than a week. Many things that go wrong with the body can cause headaches. Especially with the coming of Ramadan, patients may experience migraine attacks because the body leaves its normal routine and moves to a different position. When the patient consults a doctor with a headache complaint, which is important in migraine, it is very important to investigate the underlying causes well in terms of the course of treatment. Our treatment plan in migraine varies according to the age of the patient, the frequency of the attacks, whether there are other accompanying diseases and the type of migraine.

“IN THE PROCESS FROM IFTAR TO SAHUR, IT IS IMPORTANT TO TAKING LOTS OF LIQUID”

Stating that migraine patients should pay more attention to their nutrition during Ramadan, Prof. Dr. Okan Bölükbaşı, “Our basic advice to patients with migraine is that they should eat regularly, they should sleep regularly and they should take regular fluids. Because the brains of migraine patients are much more sensitive than other patients. Variables in the external environment, such as strong smells and flashing lights, can trigger migraines, and variables in the indoor environment, such as low blood sugar and fluctuations in blood sugar, can also trigger migraine. Therefore, our recommendation to migraine patients; Eating regularly, drinking regularly, and doing things that do not change the routine of life, such as regular sleep. Of course, when the month of Ramadan comes, this routine will change, so it is useful to pay a little more attention. Patients with migraine who want to fast during Ramadan, on the other hand, need to be more careful because many patterns are disrupted. They can take foods that we can recommend to migraine patients who want to fast and prevent the blood sugar from falling late in the sahur. For example, the intake of foods such as boiled potatoes, eggs, tahini reduces fluctuations in blood sugar a little more. Plenty of fluid intake is also important in the process from iftar to sahur.”
