At the moment, care for pregnant women in the Netherlands still starts with primary care midwives, people with a four-year HBO education who often come by to supervise the pregnancy, prepare clients for parenthood, perform home and outpatient deliveries, maternity visits and see how breastfeeding is going. Everyone is free to choose the midwife that you feel comfortable with. When a medical problem or risk requires specialist care, you will be referred to the hospital.
