Microsoft releases new version on the sly

Without fanfare, Microsoft has just made Windows 11 version 24H2 available to everyone. An early and somewhat unexpected launch, with improvements that are still vague and disparate.

It was a long-announced launch and expected rather for the end of October or the beginning of November 2024. However, the new major version of Windows 11, numbered 24H2, already seems to be available for download for all users, via the Microsoft Update Catalog. And as is often the case for months, even years, with the updates of the Redmond firm, confusion reigns at all levels.

This new version of Windows was indeed supposed to mark a major evolution for Microsoft’s operating system, with the arrival of important changes and interesting new functions. A thorough overhaul of the Start menu, with an organization of icons in movable groups and the addition of a side panel dedicated to the Connected Mobile application, was for example expected, as was the return of Copilot as a standalone application, or the ability to browse files on your smartphone directly from File Explorer.

Problem: some of these new features have already appeared gradually over the course of previous updates (Copilot as a standalone application) and others seem to be absent from the newly released 24H2 version. Things are even more complex, because the new functions will, as usual, be distributed differently to users. Thus, two computers running the same version of Windows 11 24H2 will not have the same functions and improvements at the same time… A real tangle of knots to untangle.

According to information reported by the Neowin sitethe update allowing the transition to Windows 11 24H2 would bear the number KB5039239, and would for the moment only be available on the Microsoft Update Catalog. Which is particularly odd, because this update is dated June 15, 2024, almost three months ago. Furthermore, his publication note only mentions extremely minor, if not insignificant, contributions, and in any case very far from the developments expected from a new major version of Windows.

The most curious or adventurous can now download and install the KB5039239 update to get a preview of Windows 11 24H2. However, we strongly advise you to refrain. In this back-to-school and back-to-the-office period, it would be a shame to rush into installing a potentially faulty update that could cause annoying bugs on your PC. For our part, we will send you new information as soon as we have installed this new version of Windows 11, and take stock of what it actually contains for the moment.
