Microsoft recently patented a new modular VR and AR device that can be modified and customized to meet users’ needs.
Microsoft, which has long wanted to have a say in the VR market, was another VR device in the form of glasses recently. The newly emerged patent is more similar to the VR glasses we know. “Modular head-mounted device” patentoffers customizability, one of the most important shortcomings of VR devices.
Customizable VR device from Microsoft
VR devices on the market currently do not have modular models that can be customized to meet every user’s standards. Instead, products are sold where we can use whatever is offered with a standard edition. Microsoft’s patent aimed to solve this problem by creating a modular device.
Microsoft explains the structure and anatomy of the modular head-mounted VR and AR device as a rigid-frame product with features that can be easily modified by any user.
The modular sensor and display module will come with a standard interface for use in compatible systems, including, for example, headband, VR headset, helmet and the like. In some applications, another module may be provided, such as a rear add-on module that can provide auxiliary processing, storage, and power supplies for the modular sensor and display module.
The patent argues that using a modular VR device could enable systems to be designed and built independently, allowing gamers and other users to mix and match different modules to create the perfect combination of features at any given moment.
Various sensory modules can be used and each user can modify them to fix their current problems. The patent provides a sample of several modules that can be used by VR and AR devices.
Microsoft also talks about how different modules can work with game controllers in various ways.
