Microsoft is considering adding Xbox Game Pass with ads and cloud-specific tiers, as well as possibly bringing back the Family and Friends plan.
Microsoft’s changes to Xbox Game Pass tiers may be continuing, according to one claim. Windows CentralSources in Microsoft Xbox Game Pass with ads and says it’s considering adding more tiers, including cloud-only options.
Xbox Game Pass with Ads and Cloud-Based Tiers in the Works
First, regarding the cloud-only tier, this will reportedly be a cheaper tier where you don’t need to own an Xbox console. You’ll just need a platform that can access cloud-based games from Xbox Game Pass. “This will be designed for users who aren’t interested in purchasing an Xbox console, which could include players on competing console platforms,” the report says. It could also be for users who don’t enjoy the upfront costs of owning a console at all.
Regarding the ad-based tier, the report notes that Microsoft is “exploring the potential” of one. However, there are currently no plans to launch an ad-based tier.
There’s also talk of a possible return of the Family & Friends plan for the service. Microsoft initially tested the idea in 2022 and 2023. That test was available in multiple regions and charged $24.99 per month to access a single subscription for up to five people.
Earlier this month, Microsoft made major changes to existing tiers, including cancelling the Xbox Game Pass Console in favor of the new, more expensive Xbox Game Pass Standard.
