In the latest Canary version of its browser, Microsoft is testing a new feature to easily transfer files from one computer to another through Edge.
You may soon be able to use Microsoft Edge to transfer files between multiple machines. Microsoft has indeed launched a test “Drop”, a new feature to send files between multiple machines through its web browser. For this to work, the browser must be signed into the same Microsoft account on all devices, with Drop relying on OneDrive’s online storage to achieve file sharing.
A test available on Edge Canary
For the time being, the function is only available within the Canary version of Edge (on Windows and macOS) and must be activated manually, Microsoft having hidden it in the flags, the experimental functions of the browser.
If you want to test it, go to the address edge://flags/#edge-webapp-sidebarclick the drop-down menu and change the value Default by Enabled and restart the browser.
At this point, Drop is still not visible. You must activate the display of its icon by going to the Settings of the browser, in the menu Appearance.
The Drop icon should appear at the top right of Edge’s address bar. All you have to do is click on it to open the dedicated pane on the right of the browser. The functionality, which is also deceptively similar to that of an instant messenger, not only allows you to exchange files, but also to create reminders or notes.
To initiate sharing of a file, simply drag and drop it directly onto the pane, or click the button + to open your machine’s file explorer to select the item there. The document thus sent is automatically stored on OneDrive, in a “Microsoft Edge Drop” directory created for the occasion and becomes accessible via Drop from all Edge entities connected to your Microsoft account that you use.
You will therefore be able to find your documents both from the Desktop version of the browser on Windows and macOS, and from the Android and iOS mobile applications. As it stands, the feature allows transferring individual files, but does not allow transferring directories.
In recent months, Microsoft has multiplied the updates of its browser to integrate features likely to attract new users. Last November, for example, Microsoft launched a “Super secure” mode in Edge. More recently, the Redmond firm formalized the arrival of Microsoft Edge Secure Network, a VPN solution provided by Cloudflare intended to secure your browsing by encrypting your data and hiding your IP address.
