Microsoft fixes 73 security vulnerabilities

Microsoft has been releasing a new Patch Tuesday since February 13. On the program, 73 fixes for flaws and bugs in Windows and other software. But still no solution for a big problem on Windows 10…

Without much surprise, Microsoft published its traditional Patch Tuesday on Tuesday, February 13, this famous set of fixes that the publisher distributes on the second Tuesday of each month, to repair bugs, but also, and above all, to fill recent security vulnerabilities. identified and sometimes already exploited by pirates. This new delivery is no exception to the rule, bringing together some 73 “bandages” to correct vulnerabilities in Windows 10 and Windows 11 – including 2 of the zero-day type, that is to say already actively exploited by hackers – , but also in other Microsoft products such as Outlook, OneNote, Teams, Windows Server or even Azure. It is therefore better not to delay downloading and installing these patches to avoid any risk of piracy, even if there is no guarantee at the moment that this Patch Tuesday will not cause subsequent problems by itself, some recent updates from MIcrosoft having done more harm than good to users (see our article).

As usual, the documents relating to Patch Tuesday refer to a host of flaws with details that will only interest specialists – and even then… –, especially since they are written in abstruse language, with information visibly translated directly from English by an automatic system. No interest for particular Windows users, except for curious people who want to know about the CVE-2024-21357, CVE-2024-21357 and other CVE-2024-20684 that concern remote code execution or denial of service issues. Exciting.

The February Patch Tuesday also fixes various problems referenced by Microsoft, but unfortunately not the bug which causes error 0x80070643 in Windows 10 with update KB5034441 and which still has no solution, several weeks after its appearance ( see our article).

Patch Tuesday February 2024: preparations for future developments

On the functional side, the only new thing that Microsoft is highlighting concerns Copilot, which now appears on the right side of the system tray in the taskbar, thereby making the mini button disappear from the Show desktop display in the taskbar. corner, which is now disabled by default but which can be reestablished in Windows settings. A little relevant novelty insofar as the famous AI assistant which will interfere everywhere is still unavailable in Windows in France.

Furthermore, even if Microsoft does not give many details, this Patch Tuesday already contains the changes that the publisher will implement before March 6, 2024 to comply with the requirements of the DMA, the European regulation on digital markets which will come into force on March 6, 2024. Changes that are still mysterious, but which should above all make it possible to uninstall applications and functions installed and activated by default such as Edge, Bing or Photos.

As always, the procedure for installing Patch Tuesday is very simple. Simply go to Windows Update, via Windows Settings, search for the availability of updates by clicking on the appropriate button if they are not offered straight away, then click on the Install button. Be careful though, as Microsoft has obviously not unified its names, it is never a question of Patch Tuesday but of Cumulative Update. You will see them appear under different references, depending on your version of Windows: KB5034763 for Windows 10 22H2 and KB5034765 for Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2.

We have not encountered any problems following their installation, but it may be wise to wait a few days before carrying out the update, while you see if any users report any problems on the forums. You can never be too careful!
