A few days ago, Microsoft deployed Windows 11 build 22567 to members of its Insider program and unveiled many features. But the next build, stamped 22572, should be even more interesting. Microsoft has indeed resurrected the tabs in File Explorer. This hidden feature (and disabled by default) was discovered by Rafael Rivera, a developer specializing in reverse engineering, who shared his discovery on Twitter.
While Microsoft has yet to officially announce the return of tabs to File Explorer in Windows 11, the feature already looks very promising. Screenshots posted by another user show that File Explorer can handle a large number of tabs with the ability to scroll through them, as already exists on web browsers.
The arrival of a tab navigation system in Windows 11 File Explorer should delight users who have been asking for this function for many years. In 2018, Microsoft had already tested the possibility of integrating tab navigation in a Preview of Windows 10 under the name of Windows Sets, before changing its mind.
