Microsoft is working with media website Semaphore on a new project that uses ChatGPT to help create news stories, The Financial Times reports. It’s one of several journalism collaborations Microsoft plans to announce today, and it follows a New York Times lawsuit against the software giant and its partner OpenAI for copyright infringement.

The report states that Semafor, co-founded by Buzzfeed’s former editor-in-chief Ben Smith, will create a publication called Signals, sponsored by Microsoft, for an undisclosed but significant sum. It highlights breaking news and analysis, delivering up to a dozen posts a day. All stories will be written entirely by journalists, with AI effectively acting as an investigative tool.
Specifically, the Semafor team uses AI tools to quickly find breaking incident reports in multiple languages from other news sources around the world, while providing translation tools. So an article might include Chinese, Indian or other sources, with reporters adding context and summarizing different perspectives. “Journalists need to embrace these tools if they are to survive and thrive for the next generation,” Noreen Gillespie, a former AP journalist who now works at Microsoft, told The Financial Times. he said.
