Microsoft accidentally announces Steam for Xbox, deletes the evidence, but the internet forgets nothing

With upcoming updates and products, Microsoft wants to bring together the best of Xbox and Windows. How far this plan goes could have now revealed a briefly published picture on which Steam could be seen, among other things.

What kind of picture is that? In a new blog post on Microsoft.com for the currently running Game Developers Conference 2025 (short: GDC), Leo Olebe, his sign VP of Global Partnerships at Xbox, reveals how to get billions of new players in the Xbox cosmos in the future.

The exciting thing: In the first version of the article, there was a picture with the new Xbox user interface, through which you can control all your games on the television, tablet or handheld. A rider for Steam was also visible. Could there be access to your Steam library in the Xbox cosmos for the first time?

After the publication of the article, journalist Tom Warren contacted The Verge a Microsoft contact to check that. Team Xbox’s reaction: The picture was immediately taken offline. However, the internet forgets nothing. For example, you can watch the original on Theverge.com.

The PlayStation 5 clearly beat the Xbox Series:

It is official, the console war is over: In view of the PS5, Phil Spencer says that he no longer wants to get all the players to the Xbox

Steam via Xbox

Was that a mistake or an early announcement? The well-networked Tom Warren continues in his article that he spoke to several sources within Microsoft, and they explained that it was actually the plan to display all installed PC games via the new Xbox app. It does not matter whether they belong to Steam or Epic Games Store.

This fits an earlier statement by Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who indicated that they want to bring PC sales platforms such as Epic Games Store on Xbox consoles at some point (via Theverge.com).

The sources of Tom Warren should also report that the new Xbox app would still be at a very early stage and that a lot could change. By the way, Microsoft has not yet had a comment on the incident. It has been clear that Microsoft is working on a competitive product for a successful Steam Deck since November 2024. Phil Spencer confirmed: There will be an Xbox handheld and it is already being worked on it
