During the commemoration, chairman Ploeg gave a short speech. He said it was nice to be able to commemorate together again. “Here at the monument and the trees we are together, with the same sadness.” Ploeg lost his brother, sister-in-law and cousin in the disaster. According to him, he and fellow sufferers are “more often than we would like” to be reminded of how their loved ones were killed in a violent way. “It’s almost inevitable.”
