Mexico’s most brutal and bloodthirsty cartel, the Jalisco Next Generation Cartel (CJNG), opened fire on the Guatemalan Presidential convoy. It was stated that Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei was not in the vehicles at the time of the incident. During the clash, one of the cartel members was injured and detained.
Members of the Jalisco Next Generation Cartel opened fire when a Guatemalan convoy was spotted in the village of La Laguna on the Guatemala-Mexico border during a trip by President Alejandro Giammattei.
President Giammattei’s bodyguard saw a group of armed cartel members approach during his tour of the village on Saturday (July 30th). The cartel was asked to stop, but the ruthless criminal organization ignored the warnings and launched an armed attack on the convoy.
Josué López Velázquez, a leading figure in the cartel, was injured during the attack and was detained by the police.
The Guatemalan Army shared on its official Twitter account, “The rest of the people in the convoy fled to Mexico. Mexican authorities then stopped 4 people from Guatemala.”
In a press release by the military, it was reported that the gunmen who had fled to Mexico left three grenades behind them.
According to local media reports, President Giammattei was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.
