After online harassment, Meta (formerly Facebook) tackles harassment in the metaverse. The company has just announced the establishment of “Personal Boundary”literally “personal limit” in French, a new option that allows you to configure an impassable living space around your avatar.
The goal is to impose a fixed distance between avatars to prevent others from getting too close to you or trying to act inappropriately against your virtual self.
These “Personal Boundaries” are being rolled out across two metaverse virtual worlds, Meta, Horizon Worlds and Horizons Venue. They will allow you to keep other avatars at a distance of 3 feet from yours, or about 1.20 m. When a user tries to invade your personal space by crossing this virtual border, the system will automatically block their movement without any haptic feedback on your side.
Meta wants behavioral standards in its Metaverse
The issue of harassment within its virtual worlds is taken very seriously by Meta. The firm thus wishes to take the lead in creating behavioral standards within its virtual reality experiences, although they are still very recent.
This is also the reason why Meta enables personal limits on avatars by default. For the social networking giant, the next step will be to increase the options and settings, for example by offering users the possibility of customizing the size of their avatar’s living space.
