Met his torturer in a grocery store – wants to pursue trials in Syria

Human rights lawyer Anwar al-Bunni was one of tens of thousands who disappeared in the Assad regime’s prisons. He managed to escape to Germany where one day he met his own torturer in a grocery store. The trial that followed in Koblenz, Germany was groundbreaking.

– It was the first time in history that the indictment read crimes against humanity, says Anwar al-Bunni.

Collecting evidence

His organization has gathered evidence that has led to investigations against about sixty of the Assad regime’s rulers. After the fall of the Assad regime, he now hopes to find evidence that could lead to trials on the ground in Syria.

– We need to guarantee that the trial meets international standards. We do not want to replace one dictatorship with another dictatorship, says al-Bunni
