Mercedes-Benz has made a commitment to go fully electrified by the end of this decade, as market conditions allow. As part of this plan, the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant will double its production of EV-related parts by 2024.
The facility currently produces batteries and axles for the PHEV and all-electric EQ models. The company is now moving forward with the plan and has even started training existing employees so they can keep their jobs after the transition takes place.
The goal is to start producing 1 million e-drive units by 2024 for the Mercedes Modular Architecture platform.
Jörg Burzer, Member of the Management Board responsible for Production and Supply Chain Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG: “Untertürkheim will literally continue to lead Mercedes-Benz in the electric age. For our new Mercedes-EQ models with production volumes, we future-proof our traditional location in the Neckar Valley and continue the success story. One million electric drive units: We reinforce the importance of Stuttgart-Untertürkheim in our global powertrain manufacturing network and thus also the role of our highly competent colleagues.”
