NEW DRAFT LAW IN IRAN
A new bill moving through Iran’s parliament is set to tighten rules governing how men can dress in public, but authorities have begun implementing the law ahead of its official approval.
Section 49 of the bill specifies what constitutes “indecent clothing” for men. The law states: “Indecent clothing for men means wearing clothing that violates public privacy, such as clothing that does not cover any part of the body below the chest or above the ankle.”
Article 50 of the draft law orders that anyone who is “naked, semi-naked or wearing indecent clothing in public” be immediately arrested and handed over to the judicial authorities.
Those who violate the new rules also face a ban on leaving the country and using social media for six months to two years.
“THEY GRABED ME BY THE NECK AND PUT ME IN THE BACK OF THE MINIBUS”
Meysam, a 35-year-old software engineer living in Tehran, was caught by morality police earlier this month while walking in shorts on a day when temperatures reached 45 degrees.
Meysam made the following statement to The Telegraph:
“I told my wife I had to go for a walk, I couldn’t breathe and the air conditioning was off because of the power cut. Twenty minutes into the walk, a white van suddenly stopped next to me. At first I thought they might have noticed a woman without a headscarf and stopped for her. But then three men jumped out of the van and asked, ‘Where do you think you live?’ I was confused and trying to understand what was happening. They grabbed me by the neck and forced me into the back of the van. They told me they were taking me to the social security police. Inside the van were a man and three other girls, all arrested because of their clothes. The girls were crying but the men were just in shock. We never thought they would treat us so harshly just because we were wearing shorts.”
In Tehran, the capital of Iran, security forces beat two people wearing Bermuda shorts and detained them with handcuffs behind their backs, in a temperature of 45 degrees.
