The Social Democrats in Botkyrka have gained around 90 new members recently, according to information given to Sweden’s Radio Ekot. Problematic, believes Åsa Westlund, district chairman for the party in Stockholm.
– We do not know exactly what these people intend, but it is a completely abnormal influx of members, she tells the radio.
The increase comes ahead of the meeting on March 18, when the party will appoint a new group leader, also a candidate for new municipal board chairman.
– It raises the question of whether you agreed to pursue social democratic politics or whether you have something else in mind, says Åsa Westlund to Ekot.
The former municipal board chairman Ebba Östlin resigned earlier in February after she lost a vote of confidence at a members’ meeting on January 28.
Information in various media says that it may have been a coup carried out with the help of people with connections to criminal gangs. According to the party’s own investigation, there has been no such infiltration.
The party will now investigate whether members were recruited in an irregular manner, reports Ekot.
