Leslie Van Houten, convicted former member of the Manson Family, has been released from prison in California. Van Houiten has served 53 years for two murders.
The correctional service announces that she has been released on parole under supervision. Van Houten, now in her 70s, has been taken to transitional housing.
California Governor Gavin Newsom recently said he does not intend to seek to block the release. Since 2016, five requests to have the former cult member released from prison have been blocked by a state governor.
Van Houten was originally sentenced to death for the 1969 stabbing deaths of Rosemary and Leno LaBianca in their Los Angeles home. The murders took place the day after fellow Manson followers murdered actress Sharon Tate and four other people.
Cult leader Charles Manson died in prison in 2017 at the age of 83.
