Melwin Lycke Holm was not satisfied with what was said about him in “På Spåret”.
That prompted him to call the Swedish Tax Agency directly.
– I got a little angry, says Stefan Holm to Expressen.
When Melwin Lycke Holm broke through as a youngster, there was a great stir. Not only because Sweden got a new world talent in the high jump, but because he happened to be the son of Stefan Holm – one of Sweden’s greatest track and field athletes of all time.
“It feels disrespectful”
As a 17-year-old, he broke a personal record of 2.17, but then some heavier seasons followed – until this year’s SM, when he already won gold at 2.09. However, Lycke Holm continued to jump and cleared 2.18 – a new personal best, and the sixth best height in the world this year, in his age group.
Melwin Lycke Holm has talked many times about what it is like to grow up as a high jumper, and the son of perhaps the greatest high jumper in Sweden. But there is one thing he doesn’t like; When people forget, or opt out, his other surname, Lycke.
– Like when you are going to jump a competition and the announcer says that “Holm” is going to jump now. Then I can think “But Lycke Holm is on the start list – just read!” It feels… disrespectful, he tells Expressen.
Anger against “On the Track”
Stefan Holm is also in the interview with the newspaper, and has an example from the TV classic “På Spåret”.
– It was a question in “På Spåret” 2020 when they were in Karlstad. Then it showed a clip of Melwin and asked what his last name is – and only accepted “Holm” as an answer, he says.
The question even prompted the family to call the Swedish Tax Agency to take action.
– The fact was that previously you were only allowed to have one surname at the Tax Agency. So Lycke was registered as a middle name. So it wasn’t entirely wrong.
Stefan Holm continues:
– But I got a little grumpy. So I contacted the Tax Agency and changed. So now he is called Lycke Holm publicly as a surname.
