The Swedish giant had to settle for second place in the Finn Camp.
Melwin Lycke Holm now reveals the problems that have hindered him for a long time.
– Now I know exactly what is wrong, he tells SportExpressen.
Ever since Melvin Lycke Holm broke through at a young age, the Swedes have had high hopes for Stefan Holm’s boy. He has worn that on himself as well.
Holm’s success
In 2020, he fulfilled expectations by winning a historic SM gold as a mere 15-year-old. He then became the youngest ever to win SM gold in the high jump.
But after that, the career has not gone as straight up. Just one month after the historic gold, the talent injured the back of his thigh and was out for several months.
Second this weekend
After that, it was an incredibly difficult 2021 for the young Swede who is predicted to have a brilliant future. Since then, he has slowly had to rebuild his form and the 2022 season is definitely a step in the right direction.
In this weekend’s competitions of the Finnkampen, there was a second place in the high jump. After an early tear, he was unable to catch up with the Finn Daniel Kosonen who won the competition.
“I’m afraid”
Now the 17-year-old big talent reveals the unknown problems that have hampered him for a long time. And how he still hasn’t recovered from the injury two years ago.
– As recently as last Friday evening, the “physio” (physiotherapist) discovered that I am still weak in the area where I got the injury. So it still inhibits me, he tells SportExpressen.
– I am weak in the outer parts there. I’ve felt that extra little kick has been missing, but I haven’t figured out why. But now I know what it is and then I can work on it during the winter.
Lycke Holm must continue to build up the muscles in the injured thigh to be able to get rid of the problems completely. It will be both physically and mentally difficult to be 100 percent again.
– Since I broke in a high jump, I am always afraid that it will happen again. So I have to work on it mentally to dare to jump seriously again. So it’s a struggle, but I’ve started to get back on the right track, he says to the evening newspaper.
